Quando hai iniziato ad interessarti di commedia e a comprendere il potenziale espressivo che rappresenta?

Ho iniziato tardi in teatro perché ero un bambino estremamente timido. E' stata una rivelazione: era la prima volta che affrontavo le mie paure e la scarica di adrenalina è stata intensa. Poi,c’è stata la prima volta in cui ho avuto la sensazione di "costruire" qualcosa. E' stato in occasione di 'Little Ashes ', nel 2008, un film strano dove ho recitato nei panni di Salvador Dalí. Volevo dare credibilità a questo personaggio e quindi alla mia prestazione.

Sei stato anche un musicista?

All’inizio sì,volevo essere un musicista.Ameno fino a Twilight. A quel tempo, ero in tour con una band nei pub in giro per Londra.Facevamo folk-pop, ma ho sempre preferito la musica soul- Otis Redding, Van Morrison – rispetto alla musica folk.

Che cosa è l'eleganza per te come attore?

E' sicuramente un equilibrio tra magnetismo, aura, comportamenti, gesti,aspetto. Ma l'eleganza è data anche dall’ essere in grado di ascoltare e di parlare.

Che dire invece dello stile?

E’ un modo di esprimere se stessi, o meglio, un mezzo di espressione. Lo stile è spesso visto come una sorta di estetica, un modo di nascondere se stessi in un vestito. Al contrario, penso che il vero stile sia rappresentato da una buona conoscenza di sé stessi e anche dall’essere molto onesti con voi stessi.

E' difficile trovare buoni script quando sei una superstar?

Sì, perché è difficile comprendere come ti vede il pubblico. Oggi, le persone sanno un sacco di cose sugli attori al di fuori della loro professione. La scelta dello script è costituito dall'interesse intrinseco dello stesso,ma anche in quello che è quasi un manifesto personale : la scelta di un dato personaggio, mi prende troppo!

Perché hai scelto 'The Rover' di David Michôd che uscirà presto? Per andare nella direzione opposta rispetto alla tua immagine pubblica?

Probabilmente un po', è parte dell'equazione.Lo volevo veramente , ho fatto il provino due volte! Lo script era meraviglioso, ho lavorato duro. La storia è fantastica, molto originale,proposta in un modo molto innovativo. Mi è sembrato da subito qualcosa di molto diverso da tutto il resto e io ho voluto a tutti i costi farne parte.

Come la tua partecipazione allo spot per il marchio girato con Romain Gavras per Dior, un modo per aiutare a cambiare la tua immagine agli occhi del pubblico?

Lo spero.E’ stata un’avventura molto strana.Non avrei mai immaginato di pubblicizzare un marchio.Tuttavia è stato facile decidere,non ho mai dubitato della scelta.E’ stato facile,perché per me è stato rilevante il fatto che tutti abbiamo condiviso le stesse idee e ambizioni.

Romain Gavras ha molto apprezzato il tuo coinvolgimento nel progetto e la tua interpretazione in esso…

Questo è il motivo per cui ho voluto fare questo progetto con lui fin dall'inizio, perché sapevo ne sarebbe rimasto coinvolto. Negli spot, si sente sempre questa sensazione di disagio, questa distanza tra il regista e gli attori, tra il prodotto e gli attori, tra il film e il pubblico ... Io non volevo questo.Nei lavori di Romain, c'è vita, sangue e sudore. Una crudezza che si può toccare con mano.Non avrei potuto rappresentare il tipo che si mette in posa,proprio per questo il merito dovrebbe andare a Romain. E' lui che ha innescato e ispirato questo tipo di onestà d’interpretazione.

Ti fidi completamente di lui?

Assolutamente.Dalla prima volta che l’ho incontrato, mi è piaciuto il suo atteggiamento. Era un po' riservato, non ha detto subito di sì,ha voluto prima incontrarmi. Mi ha detto chi era e che cosa voleva fare. Ho sentito di volere la stessa cosa, eravamo sulla stessa lunghezza d'onda.Ma allo stesso tempo volevamo essere cauti, perché un malinteso tra un regista e un attore è in grado di creare alcuni abomini. Avevo completa fiducia in lui.Da contratto avevo l’ultima parola su ciò che veniva girato,ma non ne ho avuto bisogno. Volevo che Romain producesse ciò che aveva in mente,in modo che potesse essere il suo film.

Nessuna paura dunque…

Nessuna, ed è stato incredibile. La maggior parte delle volte,il fatto di lavorare con grandi aziende implica che tutto venga messo nero su bianco sul contratto,ma in questo progetto nessuno dubbio e nessuna paura.

Cosa sarebbe il cinema americano senza attori britannici?

E' vero! E' incredibile, non è vero? Inglesi o australiani. O i canadesi!Siamo fastidiosi per loro!(ride). Quando sono arrivato a Hollywood,eravamo in pochi,e alcune persone deridevano il nostro accento.Oggi sono più del tipo 'Torna a casa!'Sono molto curioso di vedere come si evolveranno le cose.

E' una questione di cultura differente,di formazione,di estrazione sociale,forse…

Esattamente.Il profilo degli attori britannici è cambiato molto negli ultimi anni.Prima gli attori provenivano tutti dalla classe media,da scuole private,dove avevano studiato teatro.In pochi anni la situazione è cambiata,e adesso provengono da ogni contesto sociale perché hanno ottenuto borse di studio da parte del governo.La società si è evoluta,per poter essere un attore in Inghilterra , è necessario disporre dei mezzi necessari o diventa tutto molto difficile.

Se fai un passo indietro e consideri la tua carriera,ti senti come se stessi alla ricerca di qualcosa? Sei ambizioso?

Sì. Quando fai un film di Twilight dopo l'altro,ti chiedi se riuscirai mai a fare qualcosa di diverso.E poi accade con Cronenberg o qualcun altro e ti rendi conto che ti puoi realmente cimentare in cose che non hai mai fatto prima.Devi solo saper cogliere l’opportunità.

Cosa ti ha condotto a Cronenberg, con il quale stai lavorando di nuovo dopo Cosmopolis?

Lui è un uomo incredibilmente intelligente,tanto per cominciare. Poi, lui è un artista dalla notevole integrità, non ha mai fatto un film per cattive ragioni e sicuramente non per soldi. Lui è un uomo d'onore, se questa parola ha un senso.E ognuno si sento a suo agio sul set, ed è uno dei pochi che continua a cercare di superare i limiti,il che è fantastico. È riuscito a mantenere intatte la sua passione e la curiosità.

Che dire dello sport? Sei ancora un tifoso dell'Arsenal?

Sì, anche se non riesco a tenere il passo della Premiere League,le partite vengono trasmesse troppo presto in California. Ultimamente,sono molto preso dalla boxe,mi piace guardare le categorie dei pesi leggeri: peso medio, welter, super-welter e anche dei pesi piuma.

Cosa ti piace della boxe,l'aspetto coreografico?

Sì, certamente e non c'è nessun altro sport in cui la sconfitta può apparire più terribile e dolorosa. E' uno sport, una disciplina terrificante dove l'onore riveste un ruolo determinante. E’ bello, davvero.

Pensi che Arsène Wenger dovrebbe rimanere in carica all'Arsenal?

Sì, mi è sempre piaciuto, ma con il tempo, ha sviluppato una sorta di paura di vincere.

When did you start to be interested by comedy and realise the expressive potential it represents?

I started late in a drama club because I was a very shy child. It was a revelation: it was the first time I confront myself to my fears and the adrenaline rush was intense. Then, there was the first time I had the feeling to "build" something. It was for 'Little Ashes' in 2008, a weird film where I played Salvador Dalí. I really wanted to give credibility to this character and therefore to my performance.

You've also been a musician?

At the be beginning, I wanted to be a musician. It was still the case until Twilight. At that time, I was touring with a band in pubs around London. We were playing folk-pop but I've always prefered soul music more - Otis Redding, Van Morrison - than folk music.

What is elegance for you as an actor?

It is surely a balance between magnetism, aura, behavior, gestures, look. But elegance is also being able to listen and to speak.

What about style?

This is a way of expressing yourself, or rather a means of expression. Style is often viewed as a kind of cosmetic, a way of hiding yourself in a suit. On the contrary, i think that true style is first to have a good knowledge of who you are and also be very honest with yourself.

Probably a little, it's part of the equation. I really wanted it, I auditioned twice! The script was wonderful, i worked hard. The story is fantastic, very original, told in a very innovative way. It was something that seemed very different from everything else and I wanted to be part of it.

Was your participation to a movie brand like the one you did with Romain Gavras for Dior, a way to help change your image to the public eye?

I hope. This adventure was very strange. Never would have I had imagined filming for a brand. However, the decision was easy to make and I never doubted it. If it was that easy it's cause it meant a lot to me, the fact that we all shared the same ideas and ambitions.

Romain Gavras was very admiring of your involvement in the project and of the way you played along...

This is why I wanted to do this project with him since the beginning because I knew he was as involved. In commercials, you always feel this feeling of discomfort, this distance between the director and the actors, between the product and the actors, between the movie and the audience... I didn't want that. In Romain's work, there is life, blood and sweat. A rawness you could almost touch. There was no way I'd be the guy who only poses but all the merit should go to Romain. He's the one who sparked off and inspired this kind of honesty.

You trust him completely?

Absolutely. As soon as I met him, I liked his attitude. He was a bit reserved, didn't say yes right away, he wanted to know me first. He told me who he was and what he wanted to do. I felt the same, we were on the same wave length. But we were right to be cautious because a misunderstanding between a director and an actor can create some abominations. I had complete faith in him. It said in my contract that I had the last word on what shot and kept but I never used it! I wanted Romain to produce what he had in mind, for it to be his movie.

So, no fears then...

None and it was incredible. Most of the times, working with big companies implies stating everything in the contract, but in this one no one was doubting or afraid.

What would be the American cinema without British actors?

It's true! It's incredible, isn't it? British or Australians. Or Canadians! It's annoying them, too. (laughs) When I first arrived in Hollywood, we were only a few, and people mocked our accent. Today, it's more: 'Go home!' I'm very curious to see how things will evolve.

It's a matter of different culture and backgrounds so of richer acting chops maybe...

Exactly. British actors' profiles have changed a lot those last few years. Comedians all come from middle class, and private schools where we learned theater. Just a few years ago, they came from every social background because they got scholarships from the government. It's evolved now, to be an actor in England, you need to have the means necessary or it's very difficult. 

When we look back on your career, it feels like you were looking for something? Are you ambitious?

Yes. When you do one Twilight movie after another, you wonder if you ever gonna do something different. And then it happens with Cronenberg or someone else and you realize you can play stuff you never even thought about before. You have to take your chances.

What drew you in with Cronenberg, with whom you're working again after Cosmopolis?

He's an incredibly intelligent man for starters. Then, he's an artist with a complex integrity, who never did a movie for bad reasons and definitely not for money. He's an honorable man, if that word has any sense. Everyone feels it on set and he's one of the last who keeps pushing the limits, who keeps searching and that's great. He managed to keep his passion and curiosity intact.

What about sports? Are you still an Arsenal fan?

Yes, even if I don't keep up with the First League because the games air too early in California.

Lately, I've taken a big interest in boxing, I like to watch the lightweight categories: middleweight, welter, super-welter and the flyweights too.

What do you like about boxing, is it the choreographic aspect?

Yes, certainly and there's no other sport where defeat can be as terrible and painful. It's a sport, a terrifying discipline where honor has a big place. It's beautiful, really.

Do you think Arsène Wenger should stay in charge of Arsenal?

Yes, I always liked him but with time, he kind of developed a fear of winning.

That's a pretty French attitude...

Indeed. Arsenal is probably the only team in the First League that plays like a French team. They're more busy playing with elegance than trying to win! We don't win but we sure play well...
