Scritto da Bruce Wagner e diretto da David Cronenberg, Maps to the Stars intreccia la bellezza selvaggia di Los Angeles con la tragicomica e cupa storia di una famiglia di Hollywood i cui componenti, alle prese con gli implacabili fantasmi del loro passato, evidenziano quanto fama, successo e apprezzamento, comportino un alto costo da pagare.
Frutto di un lavoro durato due decenni, la sceneggiatura di Maps to the Stars risale ai primi anni Novanta e si rifà all'esperienza personale dello stesso Wagner, che prima di diventare sceneggiatore ha lavorato come autista di limousine (a lui si ispira il personaggio interpretato nel film da Robert Pattinson) a Hollywood e ha vissuto da vicino le turbolenze di un ambiente fatto di contraddizioni, di gloria e cattiveria, di ambizioni e illusioni, e di successo improvviso e clamorose cadute. Cambiando totalmente genere e allontanandosi dalle tematiche che lo hanno reso famoso, Cronenberg conMaps of the Stars realizza un anomalo dramma al cui centro si pone la folle famiglia dei Weiss: un padre guru, un figlio adolescente rubacuori e fresco di rehab, una madre intenta a mantenere alte le quotazioni del figlio attore e una figlia misteriosamente sfregiata e ossessionata dal tentativo di trovare un proprio posto nella cerchia familiare. A dar mistero alle dinamiche dei Weiss intervengono, però, una serie di presenze non in vita, di fantasmi, che mischiando ricordi, speranze fugaci e bisogni irrisolti, rispecchiano la contemporanea attenzione per temi come la morte, la depravazione e la risurrezione.
Girato tra Toronto e Los Angeles, Maps to the Stars conta sulla direzione della fotografia di Peter Suschitzky (fedele collaboratore di Cronenberg dai tempi di Inseparabili), sulle scenografie di Carol Spier, sui costumi di Denise Cronenberg e sulle musiche di Howard Shore.
I PERSONAGGI PRINCIPALI
Al centro di Maps of the Stars vi è il personaggio di Havana Segrand, una delle più celebri attrici di Hollywood da sempre all'ombra della sua ancora più leggendaria madre Clarice Taggart, attrice ancor più famosa morta in un incendio. Ad interpretare Havana e la madre Clarice sono rispettivamente Julianne Moore e Sarah Gadon, chiamate a dar vita ad una relazione madre/figlia che non conosce nemmeno i confini della morte. Mostro senza vergogna, Havana è una donna completamente isolata che vive in un mondo di finzione, dato che è come se non avesse una famiglia ed è molto arrabbiata con la madre per il modo in cui, secondo lei, è stata abusata. Il caos emotivo di cui è preda Havana prende una piega ancora più oscura quando il ruolo della madre in un film di prossima produzione potrebbe essere assegnato a un'altra e non a lei, facendole vedere il fantasma di Clarice nei momenti meno opportuni.
A prima vista, i Weiss, invece, sembrano vivere un'esistenza felice ma guardandoli da vicino è possibile notare come in loro fama, ricchezza materiale e riconoscimenti, siano solo una cartina tornasole per dubbi, amarezze e pericolosi segreti, che vengono alla ribalta con l'entrata in scena di Agatha, la figlia da lungo tempo lontana da casa per via di problemi psichiatrici in seguito a un tragico incidente che l'ha lasciata terribilmente segnata con cicatrici e ustioni su viso e mani. Portata in scena da Mia Wasikowska, Agatha rientra a casa e, per volere del fato, trova lavoro a fianco di Havana.
L'ultima persona che avrebbe voluto rivedere Agatha in famiglia è il padre Sanford, un guru che fa da psicologo in tv, offrendo banalità new age e dispensando consigli per le masse. Impersonato da John Cusack, Sanford annovera numerosi clienti celebri - uno di questi è proprio Havana Segrand - ed è fortemente attaccato al successo del figlio adolescente Benjie, star di una serie televisiva. Con il volto di Evan Bird, Benjie sta cercando di far il punto sulla sua carriera dopo esere finito in riabilitazione a causa di un problema di droga ma è costretto a confrontarsi con il fantasma del suo spirito adolescenziale. Chi difenderebbe sempre a spada tratta Benjie è la madre manager Cristina, interpretata da Olivia Williams.
Tornando a Los Angeles, Agatha stringe una solida amicizia con Jerome, il suo autista di limousine. Inscenato da Robert Pattinson, Jerome è un aspirante sceneggiatore che si mantiene lavorando come autista ed è l'unico personaggio della storia che non viene sfiorato dalla pazzia o da un fantasma.

MAIN CHARACTERS
At the center of Maps of the Stars is the character of Segrand Havana , one of the most famous Hollywood actresses always in the shadow of his more legendary mother Clarice Taggart , even more famous actress died in a fire . Returning to Los Angeles, Agatha holds a solid friendship with Jerome , his limo driver . Staged by Robert Pattinson, Jerome is an aspiring writer who keeps working as a driver and is the only character in the story who is touched by madness or by a ghost.
